The Fifth Wall
If you follow me on instagram you’ll know I’m an avid believer in painting the 5th wall (the ceiling) a colour that’s not white. We have defaulted to this for a few reasons, and now a lot of people feel like it is ‘wrong’ to paint a ceiling anything other than white. ‘It’ll make the room feel smaller, it’ll feel weird’ are often comments I get when I suggest this. If you want an elevated look in your room, you’ve got to step away from the traditional norms and be creative.
In my experience, painting the ceiling the same colour as the walls makes the room feel bigger, even if that colour is dark and moody! This is because the line that joins the wall and ceiling is blurred, and the walls seem to go on forever. When you think about it, it makes sense- people often agree that painting a room white makes it feel bigger. Why? Because the ceiling is also white so therefore it’s all one colour! Without knowing it we’ve followed this theory forever, but its stands true for any colour.
The greater the contrast between the walls and the ceiling colour, the more aware you are of the ceiling itself. A white ceiling with dark walls feels like you’ve put a lid on the room in my opinion. This is true if the ceiling is painted any colour that is different from the walls, it essentially lowers the ceiling.
